people in five days.”

This is the second season for “Beginnings,” the first of which in 2010 focused on New

York and featured Carolina Herrera, Yoko Ono, Mario Sorrenti and Massimo Vignelli, among

others.

One common sentiment among the disparate cast of “Beginnings: Paris,” was people

"It was definitely nerve wracking the whole time," Noyola said. "It was definitely mentally tough to get through this weekend. I was just focusing on just doing my role, and making sure I controlled the midfield as much as possible. Making sure we were solid in there. It was great that I got an assist and a goal out of it. But I think that came mostly from me focusing on my role."

Scoring the game-winner didn't hurt. It was her team's first goal in three years in the finals and it was a lift for everybody.

"I think it kind of broke that cycle that we had been in," Noyola said. "I think at halftime we had a different mentality. The past three years in the final four, at halftime we were kind of demoralized. Almost scared. Not understanding why things weren't falling our way.

"I think this time we realized, ‘Hey, this is what this is all about. It's not going to be perfect. It's not going to be ping, ping, ping a hundred percent of the time like we've been able to do in [previous] games. It's about staying in the moment. It's about keep moving forward.' With the year's top surf films participating which will include Hawaii premiers and short films, local and internationally acclaimed musicians, as well as exciting opportunity drawings of surfboards, snowboards and great gifts bags, surfing's films will come alive in Hawaii for all who participate. This top Australian band comes to the North Shore with percussionist/activist Pro Soul Surfer Dave Rastovich. These guys are sure to roc the house on Saturday night. Nike Golf today announced the signing of 22-year old University of Georgia graduate Russell Henley. Henley has signed a multi-year agreement to represent the Swoosh and will be using Nike Golf clubs, ball, footwear, glove, bag, apparel, headwear and accessories.

"I am excited to join the Nike Golf family as a professional athlete," stated Henley. "Playing with Nike Golf equipment throughout college, I am anxious to begin my professional career with a brand that I know and trust."

Henley was born in Macon, Georgia and played college golf at the University of Georgia. A four-time All-American, Henley had an illustrious college career. He won the 2010 Haskins Award as the most outstanding collegiate golfer. He also played in the 2010 US Open and tied for low amateur. Henley tied the University of Georgia men’s golf team record for most career wins with seven and was also named the university’s Student Athlete of the Year in 2011.

Henley competed in the Nationwide Tour’s 2011 Stadion Classic at UGA and won the event. He became only the second amateur in Nationwide Tour history to win a Nationwide tournament. Henley was a member of the 2011 US Walker Cup team before turning professional in September 2011 at the Nationwide Tour’s Soboba Golf Classic.

All weather coats are essential for any guy. There are hundreds of options out there for any price range. The jacket does not need to be trendy or expensive. Try to find a style that is classic and functional. As nice as a new Barbour jacket might be, it is out of the price range for many, but take a trip to your local thrift store or relative’s closet and you might be surprised.

With a little tailoring and new hardware, your grandfather’s Burberry trench could make a great gift for a guy you may know. No matter where you end up finding a new coat, a classic style and great fit are key.

Nike's co-dependency with its customers means business

Infosys is very proud of being on Fortune's list of the most innovative companies. Our founders were visionaries. They thought hard about the trends impacting the world, enterprises and society. That led them to create what is now known as the Global Delivery Model (GDM). A whole lot of innovation followed. But GDM still ranks as the most significant innovation – it's the one that, arguably, led to a whole new approach to IT and services.

The core of GDM is the idea of engaging with clients in a new way (in this particular case, for the delivery of IT services). This is an early example of an approach that today we call “co-creation.” Co-creation is about creative, inclusive and meaningful engagements with stakeholders to mutually expand value. That is, it's not about transactional interactions, but rather, sustained engagements between partners. Let me give an example.

Take a look at the Nike+ website. Here is a place where runners can upload data about their recent runs. They can see the history of their runs on maps, they can share them with their friends (and exchange comments, suggested runs, etc.), they can get tips, they can post information about upcoming events. Nike has given their customers a reason to want to come back to their website every day and engage; engage with Nike, engage with their friends. Nike has moved from a transactional product catalog to a website that sustains a long-term collaboration with their customers. Everyone gets added value – though not necessarily the same value: the customers get something that helps them with their fitness regime and helps them interact with friends, while Nike gets valuable information about its customers and how they are using its products. A classic win-win situation.

I think that's a great example of co-creation. It has all the key elements. There is an “engagement platform;” that is, a place (in this case a website) where the parties come together. There are multiple stakeholders (Nike and its customers). It's certainly creative (particularly visible if you go back and compare the origins of this site and how it's evolved to become what it is today).

A wish list of accessories

It's not a question of acquiring the most toys, but the most interesting ones over the course of one's life.

My list isn't one of full of “needs” and not necessarily “wants.” I consider these items as “nice to have.” The methodology goes something like this: 1) Dream without limits; 2) Seek the unique; and 3) Maximize the “cool” factor.

So here goes:

10. 19th Century baseball — Talk about “old school” feel. Gripping this vintage ball across the criss-cross stitching led to the term “four-seam fastball.” Leather Head Sports' Lemon Ball is a replica of the predecessor to the modern baseball. Great to use for playing catch, or as a conversation piece on a desk or mantel.

9. Leather medicine ball — Nowadays, there are all kinds of classes, machines and free weights available for a vigorous workout. Nike Just Managed To Give Their Dunks An Impressive Upgrade

Like Air Force Ones, Nike Dunks are a staple of the Swoosh. They're been tinkered with here and there—and, of course, released in a ton of different colorways—but, for the most part, the design of the sneaker hasn't really been changed dramatically in years. The reason: The Dunk is one of the most beloved sneaks in the Nike collection. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?

Well, Nike is messing with their Dunk formula, albeit ever so slightly, with the new Nike Dunk High AC VT sneaker. So far, we've seen the bright orange colorway featured above as well as the obsidian/turquoise colorway that's shown below. Basically, Nike has used its innovative Vac Technology to create both of the sneakers with the result being a fresh take on the classic Nike Dunk.

Is it a winner? Well, that's yet to be seen. They're only available through select Nike accounts right now, so we haven't managed to sneak a peek at them yet, outside of seeing them in these photos. But they certainly look great and offer up several improvements on the Dunk. Put it this way: We've definitely got a pair of these on the short list of sneaks that we want to buy this season. Even if it means buying a few less Christmas gifts.

After all, 'tis better than to receive than give…Errr, or something like that. Whatever. Just give yourself a pair of these, please. You'll be glad you did.

The joys of running unplugged

My initial motivation to run had little to do with exercise and lots to do with peace of mind. At the time I had three young kids, was teaching 10 fitness classes a week, volunteering at the local elementary school and coaching community soccer.

Frankly I didn't need the exercise. What I needed was some quiet time.

Running was an escape from life's noise. Just the thought of listening to the gentle sounds of the outdoors, instead of the din generated by an active family or the pounding beats of fitness music, was enough to make me look forward to lacing up my running shoes.

Over the years I've lost touch with the joy of running with little more than my laboured breathing keeping me company. Technology has become an integral part of my exercise routine. I started small with an iPod shuffle, moved quickly to various associated training tools like the Nike+ and Adidas miCoach and now run with my iPhone clenched in my fist. I monitor my pace, keep track of my distance and compare notes on both from run to run.

I'm not alone. Now-a-days it's rare to find a runner who runs au natural. Compact MP3 players and smart phones are popular companions as runners listen to music, podcasts or training tips generated by a seemingly endless supply of running apps.

My particular preference is listening to audio books which I download free from my local library. And since I only listen to the book while running, it's replaced quiet time as my motivation to don my running clothes and head out the door for a workout.

But something happened the other morning at 6:15 when I headed out the door. My phone battery died five minutes into my run which brought my audio book and Nike+GPS to a complete halt. With nothing coming out of my earphones, I tucked the phone into my jog bra and ran in silence.

Almost immediately I became more in tune with my surroundings. At that time of morning the sun isn't up and most of the houses are still dark. I could hear my footfalls, my breath and the sound of Lac St-Louis slapping the rocks that line the shore.

Some households were already up and I saw television sets keeping the early morning risers company. The cars, which were few and far between, were the only interruption in the silence. I passed a couple of other runners and we acknowledged each others' efforts with a wave and a nod, but didn't interrupt the peacefulness of the morning with words.

Before I knew it I was half way through my run. A workout I thought would prove endless without the distraction of music or an audio book, was actually a throwback to my early days of running. A time when I filled my runs not with noise but with self-talk.

I remember that some of my best columns were conceived while on the run. I also remember heading out for a run when the words wouldn't come – only to find that by kilometre two my writers block was cured and the words were flowing once again.

On this particular run, my thoughts were focused on work. I had a busy few days ahead so I created a mental to-do list. I also prepared for a meeting scheduled later in the day by talking though some of the sticky points.

Nano takes a step in the right direction

THE latest update to the Apple iPod nano, for which Bleeding Edge foolishly paid too much at a Melbourne Airport duty-free shop, is not universally popular.

In essence, the sixth-generation Nano offers only minor improvements to last year's design, which ilounge.com editor-in-chief Jeremy Horwitz described as ''extremely easy to forget'' and ''the first iPod we'd have skipped''.

There are good reasons for that criticism. This Nano conspicuously lacks some of the more popular features of its predecessors. It has lost its speaker, alarm clock and video camera - indeed, it won't even play video content - and, having had its click wheel replaced by a touchscreen with cut-down multitouch functionality, no longer has games.

The updated Nano is made of aluminium and glass, with a four-centimetre screen. It slightly enhances the interface and adds 16 new digital clock faces and a pedometer feature. It now tracks steps, distance and consumption of calories while walking and running, without having to be hooked up to a sensor and wireless receiver kit for Nike running shoes, although the Nike kit is probably more accurate. On the whole, we prefer the Fitbit pedometer we reviewed recently.

Even with the price reduced to $149 for the 8GB model and $169 for 16GB, the Nano is not particularly good value and, having paid more than that in our momentary mind storm at the duty-free counter, we probably weren't in the right frame of mind when we started to use it.

Initially, we regarded it simply as a cut-down version of our iPod classic that merely traded cuteness and compactness for capacity. If you rated it simply as a music store, it didn't compare with the 160GB capacity of the Classic, or the 64GB of the largest iPod touch.

Oregon, Nike And The Future Of College Football

Have you ever been to South Bend, Indiana? It's the hallowed home of Notre Dame, yes, but on the ground it seems like less a college town utopia than a lifeless rest stop of a community with a college dropped in the middle. As an added bonus, the only thing more dependable than the bitter cold is the stiff breeze that comes with it.

In other words, if you're not going to school there or going to a football game or stopping for gas on the way to Chicago, there's really no reason to ever visit South Bend.

That's the same reaction I had to Eugene, Oregon, where off in the distance you have beautiful mountains and evergreen trees and it seems exactly the way you'd imagine the rural Northwest. Then on the ground, you have gas stations and motels and a highway, and it's slightly less charming.

That's less a criticism of Eugene than a credit to what Nike and Oregon football have done over the past 15 years. Without football, Eugene would be Corvallis, and you'd never have a reason to go there. Fifteen years later, Eugene's the cold, rainy town at the center of college football's future.

So I went there. This past weekend, I flew out with a group of writers as guests of Nike, the principal catalyst for that 15-year transition. And through conversations with people from Nike and people from Oregon and then watching the Oregon-USC game, I got the chance to see what's behind those crazy uniforms everyone seems to love so much.

But really, everybody always wants to talk about the jerseys. I'll later realize this is by design, but in any case, my first day at Oregon, a man answers the question before we can even ask it. His name is Jim Bartko. He's the "Executive Senior Associate," which sounds like a job title from a Saturday Night Live sketch, but actually means he has his hand in just about everything related to Oregon athletics.

"Our pitch," he tells us, "is that every three years, each recruit who comes here will have a chance to work with Nike, and not only design the colors, but the product, and the look. Some of 'em get really into it, and some of them are actually working at Nike as designers."

At once, he a) completely confirms everyone's suspicions and b) spells out what makes Oregon so controversial among fans. It's not just that Nike's a silent benefactor writing checks behind the scenes; the relationship is an active selling point for some of the best college football recruits in America. Not technically illegal, but one of many recruiting tactics that seems like it should be.

But look up close, and you see athletes designing Nike uniforms is only the beginning -- that's what the fans see, and as another Oregon official put it, "that's what gets us in the door." It makes for compelling essays on branding and economic psychology as it relates to college sports, and it's kinda cool for everyone to think of Oregon as the college team that wins because of their jerseys.

But Nike's tentacles run much deeper in a relationship that's more complicated. You don't pull a powerhouse from thin air with flashy colors and cool helmets.

You say you did, so people won't look closer at how you really did it.

'Back to the Future' shoes raise $9.4M

When it comes to making the future a better place, Michael J. Fox and Nike have turned to the past and capitalized big. The shoemaker's decision last month to auction off 1,500 pairs of limited-edition NIKE MAG shoes (based on the futuristic pair worn by Fox in "Back to the Future II") brought in more than $4.7M. A matching pledge by Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki raised that final total to nearly $10M.

All of the money raised will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

"The enthusiasm this project ignited, and the funds and awareness the shoes generated for Parkinson's research, are both humbling and inspiring," said Fox in a statement. "Our Foundation is truly grateful to Nike for this unique partnership that brought Back to the Future fans, sneakerheads and the PD community together in the quest to eradicate Parkinson's from the space-time continuum."

According to a release, the Internet fervor generated by the sneaks also raised the profile of the fights against Parkinson's dramatically. The official website for the M.J. Fox Foundation saw visitor levels spike to greater than 1300-percent increase in traffic over the same day in 2010. The org's Facebook page also added more than 10,000 fans over the course of the auction.

"Creating a future without Parkinson's requires the involvement of many," added Fox. "Thanks to Nike and everyone who took part in this incredible event, our ranks have grown exponentially."

Nike could bring the swag back to Kansas

The EA Sports Maui Invitational bracket play begins today and, coinciding with the games, Kansas and Adidas will unveil a Hawaiian-inspired line of footwear and apparel.

This creative idea is to get the players and coaches involved as Bill Self and the staff wear Hawaiian shirts on the sideline and players will wear the look during warm-ups.

Michigan, UCLA, Tennessee and Chaminade, the host school, will also wear Maui-inspired apparel since all four schools wear Adidas.

These five teams will wear special warm-up shirts and a pair of adiZero Crazy Lights, the lightest basketball shoes ever weighing in at 9.8 ounces a shoe.

That's where the cool factor stops.

When Kansas' contract with Adidas is up after the 2012-13 season, Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger needs to make a deal with Nike like he did when he was at Illinois State.

Before Kansas switched to Adidas in 2005, it was a Nike school. Of course it was about money and getting the most bang for the buck, but being an Adidas school hurts Kansas' chances during recruiting, especially for basketball.

Adidas just doesn't have the swag that Nike does. I can vividly recall a majority of the players playing in Legends of the Phog were wearing Nike.

Archie Goodwin, a five-star shooting guard in the class of 2012 as rated by Rivals.com, ruled out Baylor earlier this year partially because of its Adidas status.

"I didn't like that they were an Adidas team, but that's not to say I wouldn't go to Kansas because Kansas is a great team,” Goodwin told Rivals. "I can look over the Adidas thing — I own some Adidas stuff. I didn't like their colors, either. I don't like green and gold. That's ugly. When you got ugly colors like that, you gotta be Nike. Baylor has some ugly shoes, too.”

At least he's being honest.

He ended up committing to Kentucky, a Nike school.

A commit going to school because it's Nike or Adidas or Under Armor is superficial, but so is the world we live in.

Look at Nike's football uniforms. They scream swag, especially the Pro Combat uniforms—they're unique and specially designed for each team. Heck, even the NFL is switching from Reebok to Nike next season.

I understand why Turner Gill doesn't want to have names on the back of the jerseys because he wants the players to be playing for the name on the front, not the back, but I would argue Kansas' football team needs some help in the swag department since it doesn't have names on the back of the jerseys. With the team this bad, how are fans supposed to know who is who? Remembering numbers is difficult enough, especially when you can't see somebody's face because it's covered with a helmet.

Adidas may bring in the cash, but Nike will help bring the swag.

Nike Unveils the Zoom KD IV

Launching December 3, the Nike Zoom KD IV features the new Adaptive Fit system, Hyperfuse construction and a Zoom Air unit – a versatile combination for one of basketball's most electric players.

The Nike Zoom KD IV was built to the exact specifications of Durant, who is closely involved in the design process with Nike Basketball Footwear Design Director Leo Chang. Chang has led the design for all four of Durant's Nike signature shoes since 2008. Incorporated for the first time in a basketball shoe, the new Adaptive Fit system provides a lock-down fit with a synthetic strap that wraps up from the inside of the upper and integrates with the laces for superior fit and lateral support.

Luxury goods company Burberry says its profit was up 27 percent in the six months ending Sept. 30 as retail contributed a growing share to sales and profit.

Burberry on Tuesday reported a net profit of 117 million pounds compared to 83 million pounds a year earlier. Revenue was 30 percent higher at 830 million pounds.

The company's retail outlets reported a 45 percent gain in underlying sales; retail accounted for 64 percent of Burberry's revenues in the six months, compared to 57 percent a year earlier. The other key components of revenue are wholesale and licensing.

Burberry shares were down 2.7 percent at 1,382 pence in early trading on the London Stock Exchange. However, its share price has risen by a third in the six weeks or so to Nov. 14.

Pulling this way and that over the sore point of business lending

ATTITUDES to business lending is a tug of war, with the red rag tied to the middle of the rope being the updates on how much banks are lending under the Project Merlin agreement.

Yesterday, when it emerged the UK banks are some ￡1 billion off their target on lending to small businesses, it was the same arguments we have heard since the advent of the credit crunch. Pulling hard for the cash-starved small businesses was the contention that skinflint lenders are gouging them for mere dribbles of funding. The bankers, though, pulled back just as ferociously saying that they have almost hit lending targets, but nor can they be mugs throwing good cash after bad willy nilly. Not like they did the last time, anyhow.

The unfortunate truism is that, now, lenders only want to lend to the individuals, companies or even countries that don't need the money. Singapore is a great example, and its bonds are considered to be better bets than most other investments in the world because it has the cash in reserve to pay whatever it borrows back in spades. Of course this doesn't apply to the Piigs (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain), the SMEs or the “homeowner” with a 100 per cent mortgage and a P45, who are all a little hard up for cash and could really use a loan to tide them through.

The question is if that ￡1bn in the cold, dead hands of the lenders had been set free into economy – out of the ￡56bn they have already doled out in the first nine months of the year – would we have noticed a difference?

I'm sure there are any number of firms in the UK who, like lottery winners, imagine what they might do if they got their hands on just a small chunk of it. But then that would be fantasy, not the cold hard reality of today's credit markets.

Pulling hard at the anchor of the lenders' rope are European regulators attempting to reform the banking system with demands that banks keep more readies to hand in case it looks as if the economy is set to go squiffy again, which is actually quite likely. The effects of these new standards were seen quite recently, when the market started totting up how much European banks were set to lose if Greece ended up bringing Italy kicking and screaming down with it, and their share prices were pummelled. And while the UK banks have whinged and complained steadily over the past year about how they were being forced by Whitehall to boost their own capital cushions faster than the rest of their peers in Europe, it put them in rather better stead in this case.

So that leaves us with the question of do we want stronger banks or more credit? The cases for both sides are too strong yet to be able to declare a winner.

Botulism scare is a taste of troubled times for Premier

PREMIER Foods was already facing some serious issues before two cases of botulism poisoning emerged on Sunday night. Even before the firm announced a recall of bottles of its Lloyd Grossman Korma, analysts at UBS expressed some concern about the company's chances of restructuring its ￡1.27bn debt pile.

The bank downgraded the struggling food manufacturer's shares from “neutral” to “sell”, writing that it was “difficult to see a way back from here”. And that was even before news of the health scare had emerged.

Although the firm stressed that the poisoning only affected one bottle of the product, the company is already in a weakened condition. Shares dropped 11 per cent yesterday. And for every Toyota and Tylenol – brands that managed to survive potentially disastrous recall crises – there is a Dasani (Coca-Cola's bottled water brand) or a Nike “Air Stab” (shoes which were recalled in 2008 over fears the brand might be linked to rising knife crime).

The problem could also bring back the bad taste left in the mouth by Premier's last recall crisis in 2005, when the carcinogenic food colourant Sudan One showed up in some products.

That recall, thought to be the biggest of its kind in British retail history, resulted in millions of items being withdrawn from shelves. But, as the UK's biggest food producer, its use of the banned dye was spread across the food chain and was not just limited to one product. Also, no-one got sick as a result, rather it was just some tests in a laboratory that discovered the substance.

Having weathered that in recent years, there is good chance Premier will be able to dust off its crisis management strategy to meet this latest one, but the firm is in flux.

Guam cancer survivor designs Nikes

The recent release of the new Nike Dunk High Skinny woman's shoe sports a mix of neon colors, tribal patterns and national flags, but what makes these kicks different from the rest is that the shoe was designed by a former Guam teenager and cancer survivor.

Warang McManus' shoe represents her diverse family heritage, which is a mixture of Palauan, Irish and Filipino, according to the Nike website. The shoe displays a whale tail embroidered across the back seam, a sockliner featuring a tribal pattern that resembles her brother's tattoo, and a group of sea turtles that symbolize her family members, who supported her while she survived two bouts with cancer, according to the website.

McManus' design was chosen as part of the Nike Doernbecher Freestyle program, which is a partnership between the shoe company and Doernbecher Children's Hospital. The program allows a group of patients who have triumphed over serious illnesses to design authentic Nike shoes, the website stated.

The shoes are sold on a limited-edition basis at Niketowns and nikestore.com, while the proceeds benefit the hospital. The program has raised more than $3 million since it began in 2004, the website stated.

A loyal executive is also frustrated with state

As sales plunged in early 2009 and his company scrambled to cut production and hours, Red Wing Shoe Co. President Dave Murphy studied an internal analysis of operating costs.
“From a purely economic point of view, you could argue that we shouldn't make shoes in Minnesota, but at our plants in Kentucky and Missouri,” Murphy said.

Chairman Bill Sweasy Jr., whose family has owned the iconic Minnesota manufacturer for nearly a century, nixed that notion in a hurry.

Since then, the company, one of the last of the domestic shoe-and-boot manufacturers, has increased sales by 20 percent to more than $500 million, and achieved solid profitability for the second year in a row. And it has added workers for two years in Red Wing, where it employs 1,200 at factory wages that can approach $28 an hour, including benefits.
Recovery aside, Murphy, 59, a veteran executive who once worked for General Mills, represents a Minnesota business community that has concerns about the state's business climate.

A recent survey of 350 employers, conducted for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, found that profitability this year was worse for 26 percent of respondents while better for only 19 percent. At the same time, optimism about the economy is waning. (The survey was conducted in August, a period that coincided with plunging stock markets and worries of another recession.)

And strong majorities of Minnesota businesses feel threatened by high taxes and myriad regulations.

“State corporate tax is not the biggest issue in the business,” Murphy said. “It's inspiring people, good strategy and competing against lower-priced goods from foreign shores. But taxes and regulation are significant here.”
For example, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security ordered Red Wing Shoe to keep the doors closed at its main plant for reasons that Murphy still doesn't understand. Employees generally were free to wander in and out before that, and doors were open during the good-weather months.

The company then spent $750,000 on an air-conditioning system to keep the plant cool now that the doors had to remain shut. That improvement helped push up its local property tax bill.

“We love being based in Minnesota,” said Murphy, who credits a skilled workforce with much of the company's success. “However, we do feel we're swimming against the current to some degree.”

More than two-thirds of the business owners polled were upset with the failure of the Legislature and Gov. Mark Dayton to find more common ground during a 2011 session that ended with to a several-week shutdown of state government.

“They need to stop kicking the can down the road and make the tough decisions,” Murphy said. “I wasn't happy with the outcome of the budget deal because it was smoke and mirrors, borrowing against the future, and not paying the schools what was owed this year and all the rest. I don't know why some sense of moderation and compromise is so difficult. That's not weakness. It's reasonable.”

The politicians might consider dusting off the business-led 21st Century Tax Commission report of 2009. It recommended a phaseout of Minnesota's nominal 9.8 percent corporate income tax rate, which is higher than most and riddled with enough loopholes that it collects less than 4 percent the state's budget revenue. Yet it's a huge sore point for business and a rallying cry for other states trying to lure Minnesota business.
The commission also suggested broadening the sales tax to clothing and services to reflect today's economy. That would mean broader sales tax but a lower sales tax rate.
Gov. Mark Dayton has ordered a streamlining of duplicative environmental regulations across several agencies and other measures.

Since 2010, Hyperfuse has become one of Nike's most successful and popular innovations. Thanks to its combination of breathability and stability, the technology was quickly adopted by many of Nike's top athletes, including Rajon Rondo and Russell Westbrook.

Goldman Sachs sees Olympics boosting Nike business

Goldman Sachs expects the London Summer Olympic Games next year to act as a catalyst to Nike's 2012 business, and upgraded the world's largest athletic shoes and apparel maker to "buy" from "neutral."

The brokerage also raised retailers Under Armour to "buy" from "neutral" and Aeropostale Inc to "neutral" from "sell."

However, it downgraded Ann Inc to "sell" from "neutral" and removed Abercrombie & Fitch Co from its Americas Conviction Buy list.

Goldman said Nike has outperformed the S&P index in the last six summer Olympics and its sales have historically accelerated versus peers during the games.

In September, Nike staved off margin pressure in the first quarter with strong revenue and price increases, and said it was confident about its position among peers as it heads towards the winter holidays.

For women's clothes retailer Ann, the brokerage said, it is more macro vulnerable and has shown deteriorating trends when growth slowed in the past.

Ducks dominance mostly about the (Nike) shoes

Fitting that the final game in Husky Stadium 1.0 Saturday should be against Oregon. The decrepit, 90-year old relic is as big a reason for the Ducks' domination of the Huskies as was Washington's travails with the NCAA rulebook under Don James and Rick Neuheisel.

From 1974 to 1993, Washington won 17 of the 20 games against the Ducks. But Oregon has won 12 of the past 16, including the last seven in a row, by an average margin of 26 points. That's a butt-kicking so relentless that Oregon probably has a special shoe for it.

Why not? Shoes made the Ducks.

In 2002, Oregon grad and Nike chairman Phil Knight paid for most of a $90 million expansion and renovation of Autzen Stadium in Eugene that made one of the nation's premier places to play and watch college football. With the building came locker, meeting and weight rooms that are about one chandelier shy of the Palace of Versailles, only with wi-fi.

As recruiting inducements go, the football facility is second only to women. The Huskies have been behind ever since (in buildings, not women).

When Husky Stadium 2.0 opens in 2013, the UW athletic department will have comparable facilities. But it a decade will have been lost when the Ducks ascended to Pac-12 and national eminence, as demonstrated by their appearance in the BCS national title game Jan. 10.

It's hard to quantify just how facilities create atmosphere for winning. But anyone who doubts the power of bling on a teenager hasn't been around much.

“I think it's a real factor,” Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday. “From a facilities standpoint Oregon has done a really nice job of staying at the front of the line with the things they are doing.

“Kids want to know — whether it's the weight room, the training room, the locker room — that they are at state-of-the-art facilities. It's like being in the National Football League and you're a free agent on a tour. You go somewhere like the VMAC (the Seahawks facility in Renton, an $80 milllion plant paid for by franchise owner Paul Allen) and that's why they're able to sign free agents, because guys like those features.”

Oregon's climb from stooge-ly to studly is not all about gold-plating. Sarkisian mentioned reasons such as recruiting in California, an early commitment to the spread, up-tempo offense and innovations in defensive motion and formation.

All probably true, but in college football, as with most things, it all starts with money, because there are no NCAA rules limiting spending on facilities, only on providing $20 to a player for dinner.

It's estimated that Knight will have spent more than $300 million on facilities at Oregon, including a new basketball arena named after his late son. The Husky Stadium renovation has a budget of $200 million, all from private donors and ticket buyers, none of whom has emerged as knight-like as Knight.

The building envy became clear, as well as humorous, a year ago. Before the Washington game in Eugene, UW athletic director Scott Woodward told KJR radio during an interview that while the athletic facilities were wonderful, Oregon's academic standards had fallen.

“It's an embarrassment what [the University of Oregon] academic institution is, and what's happened to them as far as their state funding has gone,” he said. “In my mind. it's a wonderful athletic facility, but they've watched it at the expense of the university (going) really down.”

UW interim president Phyllis Wise didn't care for the Duck diss, and ordered Woodward to apologize. When it read more like a clarification, she ordered him to do make a personal apology, which he did. Apparently the matter is finished, because Woodward has been seen at recess as well as after-school activities.

While it was wonderful to see that the traditional contempt between the schools has reached the level of the ADs, Woodward was trying to make a point about how state funding has undercut universities across the country. That's true, but the last thing in these times a state legislature wants to do is use public money on a sports facility, no matter how needy.

Even though Husky Stadium is a public facility at a state university, and was in need of upgrades to meet safety codes, funding the renovation out of Olympia was an immediate non-starter. Sonics fans will testify to the difficulty. So after several years of futility, boosters and athletic department officials finally put the renovation in private hands, selling bonds to cover $150 million, and private donations for the balance.

It would have been much easier and cheaper to have a rich Microsoftie come forward as Knight did. But for whatever reasons, it didn't happen, so the collection plate is being passed among the many.

It's a better way. Knight not only has bought the athletic department, with say-so over the hires and fires — and some say, a little play-calling during football games — most of the university is beholden to him.

But he also bought the school a national profile it would have never obtained any other way, and it gave the Ducks a big football recruiting advantage over the hated, formerly arrogant Huskies.

Most Ducks fans are happy to live with the compromise to integrity as long as the Huskies are thumped steadily. But change is underway, even though change is still a 14-point underdog Saturday.

Huskies sports sentiment will be given a loving airing this week. Then it's back to the college sports arms race, and the Huskies in 2013 will no longer bring a knife to a gunfight.

Nike device improves, but oversimplified

Since 2003, I've tried several fitness accessories that use the GPS system to tell you how far and how fast you're running. I've generally liked them, except for the fact that they don't work well in big cities.

Many runners I know have one of these devices — usually a watch that gets signals from GPS satellites in the sky to calculate distance and speed. These don't offer street maps, the way GPS devices in cars do, but some models have rudimentary navigation features to help get you back to your starting point. Some also try to coach you — they'll beep when you're going faster or slower than your specified target.

Nike's $200 SportWatch GPS doesn't offer that. What you get instead is a simplified device that works exceptionally well in big cities, including my hometown New York.

The problem with big cities is that tall buildings block some of the GPS signals. It might take 10 or 15 minutes for a device to find the signals, rather than just a minute or so elsewhere. As the weather gets colder, I'd prefer starting my run sooner and spending less time standing around outside waiting for the watch to activate.

The SportWatch addresses these shortcomings in two important ways.

As long as you plug the watch in to a computer regularly, using a standard USB port, it retrieves data that can help locate signals faster.

It also has a backup system when no signal is available at all. The SportWatch comes with a small sensor that attaches to your shoe and measures the amount of time between footsteps and the time your foot is on the ground. The SportWatch picks up that information wirelessly and uses it to calculate pace and distance.

With this backup, you can start your run before the SportWatch finds the GPS signals. The device works even when you're running through a tunnel or on the lower level of a bridge — places GPS can't always reach. The SportWatch automatically goes back to using the more accurate GPS system once it gets signals again.

Unfortunately, the backup sensor system is designed specifically for Nike shoes, which have slots built into them to hold the sensors. Runners can be quite particular about their shoes, and wrong ones can lead to injuries, as I've learned the hard way.

The good news is that many running stores sell Velcro attachments for other shoes, though you won't find out about them in Nike's manuals. I've found in years of testing that these third-party attachments don't work as well as Nike shoes, but a new auto-calibration feature should reduce the errors in calculating distance and pace.

The SportWatch, which incorporates a GPS receiver made by TomTom, has clear improvements over earlier models from Nike and others, though I stop short of giving it a ringing endorsement.

I find that it tries to simplify too much and allows for little customization.

Many of the settings can't be changed directly from the watch. You have to create an online account and download free software from Nike to make such adjustments from a computer.

You also have to go online for details about runs you've just completed. Lots of data get recorded during your runs, but the device only presents a sliver. You get distance, average pace, the time it took and estimated calories burned (as long as you went into the computer settings and entered your weight). You also get how long it took for each split — a point you manually record by tapping the watch's screen, be it the completion of a lap around a track or the hitting of a mile marker in a race.

But the SportWatch doesn't give you pace, distance and calorie information for each split, as many other devices do. Nor does it give you elevation and other metrics on the watch, as some competing devices do.

And once you've connected your device to a particular online account, you can't change that without completely resetting the watch and erasing all your data. Competing devices from Garmin and Timex let you change accounts. You might need to, for instance, if you loan your watch to a friend or family member with a separate account and want details of those runs placed there instead.

The watch also goes into power-save mode too quickly. If I don't start my run soon after the device finds the signals, it turns off and has to search for signals again. I can see the reasoning behind this, but it would be nice to be able to change how much time you have or to temporarily turn that off.

An upcoming software update will offer some improvements. Nike says you'll be able to set the time and date directly from the watch, without needing a computer.

There's also promise of a stopwatch feature, so you can use the device when you have no GPS signal or foot sensor around. Those are two features that should have been there from the start.

Regular Nike Zoom Kobe 7 will also have removable ankle sleeve

These are the shoes designed for people who enjoy playing in low-cut sneakers and have been on board since the Zoom Kobe IVs. Technically, you can buy multiple colorways of the shoes and mix them up however you so please. The Supreme editions (link) will represent those that want to "Play Strong." This will also include the ankle stabilizing bootie that Kobe has already been pictured wearing.

Now that that is all settled and we can now make informed decisions between the regular and Supreme editions, one has to wonder what the Elite could possibly offer at this point?

Olympia teen wants your old sneakers for charity project

That pair of old, worn-out shoes in your closet might not be much use for running track these days, but one Greece teen is looking to find as many pairs as he can for a community service project.

Jacob DiLallo, a junior at Olympia High School, is seeking used sneaker donations as part of the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program.

Old, worn-out sneakers are collected, then shipped to Nike where they are recycled to be used in sporting court surfaces, running tracks and playground surfaces to keep the materials out of landfills.

DiLallo is seeking as many donations as possible, as there's a minimum donation of 500 pairs of shoes per submission.

Sneaker collection barrels are located at Olympia, Apollo Middle School, Buckman Heights Elementary School and Longridge Elementary School, as well as the DiLallo residence at 64 Stone Fence Circle.

First Look: Nike Zoom KDIV “Nerf” Edition

When it comes to shoes, you already know that I don't have a single f*ck to give about what the general public thinks. With that said, I'd rock the hell out of these Nerf-inspired Zoom KDIV's by Nike.

Kevin Durant debuted the colorfully-designed sig shoe at last night's Oklahoma All-Star Charity game and the details are amazing. The “KD35″ on the tongue is spelled out in the patented Nerf font. The shoe boasts a syntethetic strap that wraps up from the inside of the upper as a part of Nike's new Adaptive Fit system that integrates with the laces for superior support. Colors aside, there's also clever, well-placed design quirks across the sneaker including “Big Chucky” on the heel to honor KD's childhood coach who was murdered when Durant was 16 and a heart on each toe to honor his parents. No, I don't know any of these people, but I'll honor the sh*t out of them in these.

I generally enjoyed the design of the KDIV but, at a size 13, it's hard to wear them without them looking long and clown-like. But these? Bring'em on. Plus, they come with a Nerf hoop and a ball. That just makes them more awesome even though I'll probably never play with either.

It's pretty nice to see that the lack of an NBA season isn't stopping Nike from finding creating ways to get the product out. These drop sometime in November at select retailers. Hopefully, they'll land at one near NOLA so I can go ahead and cop immediately.

W.Va. losing millions from online sales

online sales to West Virginia consumers is robbing the state of millions in needed revenue that would be collected if products were sold by the same companies with a presence here, and some lawmakers are growing impatient over Congress' failure to speed up the payments.

All of the groundwork has been laid, but Congress must give its assent to a pact hammered out by what came to be known as the Streamline Sales Tax Implementation States.

What's more, the state's chief spokesman for the group, Delegate John Doyle, D-Jefferson, says West Virginia not only has witnessed severe revenue losses in the past few years, but merchants operating inside the state's borders are playing on an uneven field.

It is fundamentally unfair," Doyle said.

For now, taxes are paid on a voluntary basis when in-state buyers Google sites such as eBay and Amazon to buy a wide spectrum of products.

We're getting about $3 million from people who collect it voluntarily," Doyle said.

And that pales dramatically alongside the projected losses in research performed by the Center for Economic Research at the University of Tennessee.

For instance, in 2007, the estimated loss to West Virginia's coffers exceeded $30 million, and by the end of 2012, that figure is expected to balloon to more than $50 million. Doyle suggested it could go as high as $60 million.

We're trying to persuade Congress to pass a law that says it's OK for us to require the companies to collect it," he said.

We have to have permission from Congress to exercise our rights as a state. We have imposed the tax. The tax is there. The tax has been here since 1912, or whenever it was that West Virginia adopted the first consumer sales tax in the nation."

Two U.S. Supreme Court decisions -- one in 1967, the other in 1992 -- held the customer is obligated to pay the tax.

But it's an onerous burden on the business to require the business to collect the tax if the business does not have a physical presence in the state," Doyle said.

So, it places the burden of paying the tax on the consumer."

What this means is that the company needn't collect the tax since it lacks bricks and mortar in West Virginia, and it doesn't matter what it is peddling over the Internet, by telephone or a mail-order catalog.

So if Nike sends you the shoes, they do not have to collect the tax because they don't have a physical presence in West Virginia," the veteran lawmaker said.

But if you buy that same pair of Nike running shoes from a store in downtown Beckley, or in a mall, that merchant has to collect the tax. I argue, as do many people, that this is fundamentally unfair to say that a product is taxed but only some of the merchants that sell that product have to collect the tax. It's just not fair."

Doyle interpreted the high court's edicts to mean the justices sensed a new wave of technology and sales approaches to reach customers from one state to another.

Gone are most of the old retail merchants that set up actual stores in just about every jurisdiction across the state, long before the invasion of malls, and then the proliferation of Internet buying.

And I also think they are saying if the states wanted to voluntarily get together and make their sales tax statutes more similar to each other, that the burden would not be so onerous," Doyle said.

Thus, the National Governors Association and the National Conference of State Legislators huddled and came up with a new wrinkle in the playbook -- the Streamline Sales Tax Project.

Nine years ago, Doyle recalled, the streamline implementation plan materialized. Over a three-year span, the effort produced a standard agreement -- not a model law, however -- but an interstate pact akin to the one on fuel taxes.

There would be a set of parameters within which every state would have to be," he said.

There would be some flexibility within the parameters, but you would have to stay within the fence."

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin says he supports the goal of the streamline taxes group and agrees that federal legislation is needed to make it all happen.

Once the group attracted 10 of the 45 states with a sales tax, the streamline sales tax governing board came on line in 2005. Today, 24 states are card-carrying members. The only states without a sales tax are Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana, Oregon and Alaska.

One rule of thumb is that states must have a uniform rate on all products, save food.

That's how West Virginia got by with the gradual reduction of the sales tax on food," Doyle said, noting efforts in recent years to slice it from 6 percent to 2, and ultimately to zero.

For several years, the group has preached its cause to Congress with a bill.

It would simply say for those states that have streamlined their sales tax structure to conform to the agreement, the burden is no longer onerous and they may therefore require any person that sells a product to a consumer who takes possession of it in their state to require that company to collect the tax," Doyle said.

That's where we are."

Doyle found it "ironic" that nearly all of the state lawmakers from across the nation lobbying for the bill are Republicans.

Democrats, generally speaking, tend to favor this, but not with a great sense of urgency," he said.

It's the Main Street Republicans who have the greatest sense of urgency. Those of us who go into this -- and this is where I'm in total agreement with them -- say it's not the revenue, it's fairness."

When he was governor, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Doyle forged a deal that called for elimination of the remaining food tax if the online purchasing tax had been collected.

If we had gotten the authority to require collection two years ago, we were going to immediately do away with the last 2 cents of sales tax on food, which brings in about $62 million," Doyle said.

It would have been just about an even trade."

House Finance Chairman Harry Keith White, D-Mingo, says some out-of-state merchants are voluntarily collecting the tax and paying into West Virginia coffers, but the trickle could turn into a stream if and when Congress gets around to acting.

Somewhere, down the road, it will happen," he said.

Echoing the sentiments of fellow legislators, White's co-chairman, Delegate Tom Campbell, D-Campbell, sees the disadvantage imposed on homeside merchants.

It's tremendously unfair to local West Virginia businesses," Campbell said.

We have a lot of local West Virginia businesses -- even in office equipment places -- and they're providing jobs to West Virginians. Yet, they start out with a 6 percent detriment among these out-of-state retailers. If there's anything we need to collect those taxes, and have an even playing field, yes, we need to do it."

Sen. Mike Green, D-Raleigh, says consumers are obligated to remit a use tax to the state if their online providers lack a physical presence in West Virginia, but, "We know this is not occurring."

It is an issue that needs addressed and, if no other way can remedy this issue, we may have to initiate legislation," he said.

I am hopeful this will be remedied by other means."

The advent of the Internet has spawned millions of small businesses across the country that operate exclusively via computers, Doyle noted.

And that makes it easy for them to peddle their wares to every jurisdiction in the nation, he said.

That mere fact indicates the burden is no longer onerous," he said.

Doyle acknowledged that some consumers -- for myriad reasons -- find it more convenient to shop with a keyboard than driving to a store, while others prefer to buy in person.

The government should not stick its nose in and use the tax policy to pick favorites between the two," he said.

And that's what we're doing now."

The Nike LeBron 9 will finally be able to take its talents to an NBA court, sort of. Nike's Heidi Burgett tweeted a picture of LeBron James' signature shoe (in the "Kentucky" colorway) in NBA 2K12 along with an announcement that it will be available in the game on October 25th. According to Burgett, more shoes are going to debut on Christmas Day, December 25th. No word on whether the game will be available as DLC, a system update, or if the shoes will automatically unlock on those dates.

Players that wear the Nike LeBron 9 in NBA 2K12 will notice a +5 increase in their dunk rating, which would be a first in this year's edition. Twitter user KarateKickz23 recently showed off a picture of the unlocked LeBron 9 with the attribute bonus. Last season, all of Michael Jordan's signature shoes - along with the peripheral Jordan Brand releases - in NBA 2K11 came with special boosts in particular skills.

In many ways, the lack of information - or even a clear shot - of the Nike Air Yeezy II is quite refreshing. We live in such a need to know culture nowadays that nothing is secret anymore, the Nike Mags notwithstanding. The closely guarded secret that is the Air Yeezy II is a chase within itself that it harkens back to the old days when we had to rely on word of mouth and blurry pictures to get our fix. So if our only reliable source for information on Kanye West's latest signature shoe is Kanye himself, I welcome that.

Of course, that being said, here is a new picture of Kanye wearing the Air Yeezy II in New York City this week. Q: What are some common mistakes made in regards to foot care when people start a new running routine?

A: The wrong shoe gear. That’s probably your main problem. They’ll run in Keds — fun, nonsupportive shoes.

Q: How do the wrong running shoes make a difference?

A: The wrong shoes don’t give support to the foot. All feet can be categorized into three basic foot types: planus flex foot or flat foot; rectus foot, or normal foot; and supinated foot, or a high-arch foot. You need to have the proper shoe gear for each one. Nike shoes are for flat feet — not all Nike shoes, but the majority. Reebok shoes are basically for rectus. Then there are New Balance and Asics — they really have more of the higher-arched foot. Then there are orthotics — custom-made inserts for shoes. They’re basically good for prevention and treatment of common injuries.

A: Really, you’ve got to go by comfort. If you are a normal individual without any medical problems, going by how the shoe feels is really an important way to evaluate whether the shoe is a good fit for you or not.

Q: What should runners do to protect their feet when starting a new routine?

A: Someone who hasn’t run in two years or a year: start slow. Train on a treadmill. Outside, there are a lot of variables — uneven pavement, holes. People fall in holes all the time. It's impossible to talk of the massacre of marsupials and football boots without mentioning David Beckham. Shortly after he dominated the news agenda with a foot injury (the great metatarsal worry of 2002), attention shifted to his kangaroo-skin Adidas Predator boots. Elite athletes had been passionate about the lightweight, buttery fit and the bounce of what sports brands call K leather. Football Federation Australia's reputed £28m pitch for the 2022 World Cup included several millions spent on a kangaroo-leather bound dossier.

In 2003 Viva! (Vegetarians International Voice for Animals) launched a concerted effort to shame Beckham and other high-profile stars into kicking kangaroo leather into touch. In Beckham's case it worked: apparently Goldenballs has been wearing synthetic boots since 2006.

Hypocritically, although major brands introduced synthetic versions for the mass market, the stars still prance about in K-leather versions. Attempts to justify this love include asking why we should campaign for kangaroos but not cows.

For starters, kangaroos are not farmed; they are hunted by licensed shooters. Their slaughter represents the largest commercial slaughter of land-based wildlife on the planet. There is a code of conduct for hunters, but evidence suggests it's hard to enforce. In the region of 3m adult kangaroos and 855,000 joeys (the baby ones) are killed every year. You may hear about their pesky abundance, but conservationists are worried about declining populations in areas where culling is sanctioned. And I won't go into the brutal ways of killing the creatures here, suffice to say the Australian Wildlife Protection Council (AWPC) says the cruelty suffered by kangaroos is comparable to that meted out to Canadian harp seals and whales.

But AWPC and Viva! detect reasons to be more cheerful. For the first time, there is now no kangaroo leather across the Adidas Predator range, and in Australia the "fall-back market" for kangaroo skin is disappearing as sports giants find alternatives in response to activist pressure. (Nike confirmed it was phasing out kangaroo leather last year.) Usain Bolt runs in his Puma Bolt Spikes which are made of a synthetic microfibre which "matches the characteristics of K leather" and creates a glove-like fit (with luck, this will be endorsement enough for your grandson). We should take these developments as a win, but the ultimate goal is still a worldwide ban.

Port Royal raid nets counterfeit merchandise

The Port Royal Police Department and investigators from S.C. Secretary of State Mark Hammond's office raided a business Friday and seized $100,000 in cash, equipment and counterfeit merchandise, according to a news release.
Investigators found that the owners of Big Lou's Entertainment and Styles on Ribaut Road were selling counterfeit Nike shoes, Gucci, Coach, Louis Vuitton and Timberland products and pirated CDs and DVDs, the release said.
Officers seized the merchandise and charged the owners each with two counts of illegal sale and distribution of recordings and one count of sale and distribution of counterfeit items.

Fall a good time for a little 'sole-searching'

One of the joys of autumn, when I was growing up, was going shoe shopping. I’m not making this up y’all. I looked forward to getting those back-to-school shoes each September. For one thing, I had gone barefoot all summer. It is one thing to wax nostalgic about a shoeless summer — “blessings on thee, little man; barefoot boy with cheeks of tan,” and all that. The reality of a barefoot summer, however, included stubbed toes, hot sidewalks and sandspurs — not to mention dog poop between the toes.

#I was happy to have a pair of sneakers to lace up when the school bell beckoned after Labor Day.

#Those new sneakers would have to last me all year, so I was careful to pick out the right pair. Truth be known, we never called what we had on our feet "sneakers." We called them "tennis shoes," although I never met anyone who actually played tennis until I went to high school.

#I never seemed to get the shoes I really wanted. Some things never change. I was greatly influenced by Madison Avenue when I was a kid -- even more so than I am today -- and Madison Avenue used television commercials and comic book ads to reach the kids of my generation. Yes, comic book ads. Think about it -- where better to sell shoes designed to make a kid run faster and leap higher than in a Superman comic?

#I always wanted P.F. Flyers. They had some of the grandest ads. They would show kids -- mostly boys, of course -- running here and there, all over their neighborhoods, leaping and jumping and climbing -- always in their black canvas high-tops. I remember one commercial where two boys saw a guy hanging by his legs from a church steeple. They ran to the fire station for help. Superman wasn't the only person in the '50s that was faster than a speeding bullet. I just knew that if I had a pair of P.F. Flyers that I could be a hero, too.

#It was not to be, however. I always got Keds shoes, with the little blue label. When I wanted white Keds I got black because they didn't show dirt as bad, and when I wanted low-cuts I got high-tops because I had "weak ankles."

#When I finally made it to high school I discovered Chuck Taylor Converse All-Stars -- still of the canvas variety, of course -- and once I graduated from college and began my coaching career I made my teams wear canvas Cons long after leather sneakers became the rage.

#Now of course footwear is a bigger business than ever before and everybody tries to define themselves by whose shoe they wear -- Nike, Adidas, Reebok -- everybody is label conscious when it comes to sneakers.

#Well, actually, that is almost everybody. There are some people who could care less what kind of sneakers adorn their feet, as long as they are in one piece and keep their feet warm and comfortable and dry. That's right. There are many, many people -- young and old, male and female -- who are wondering what they will wear on their feet this winter. And there are more people like that in our very community than we would care to admit.

#Jesus said, "If you love me, take care of my sheep." He also said, "I was barefoot and you gave me shoes."

#OK. I paraphrased that last one. He said, "I was naked and you gave me clothes." Same difference.

#The First Baptist Church in Conyers likes to take the words of Jesus and put them into action in ways that help the people of this community -- and the world community -- who need help the most. Last year, you might recall, they collected 17,000 pairs of blue jeans and distributed them to men, women, young people and children in our community and beyond that otherwise would not have had blue jeans.

#This year the emphasis is on sneakers. They have just kicked off their "Lose your Sole" campaign and hope to collect at least 10,000 pairs of new or gently worn sneakers between now and Christmas. They hope that people will donate shoes that they would wear themselves and not shoes that they have worn out themselves. The shoes will be distributed to agencies as close as right next door and as far away as Africa, Nicaragua and Eastern Kentucky.

#The church has many activities lined up in conjunction with their shoe drive. There will be a "Lose Your Soles" 5K and Fun Run on Oct. 29. On Nov. 13 morning worship attendees are encouraged to show up wearing sneakers -- and to go home without them. The entire community is invited to consider donating a pair -- or two -- of sneakers at the church's annual living Christmas in December. UCLA student sexually assaulted, prompting a police crime alert

Authorities are warning people to be vigilant around UCLA after a female student there was sexually assaulted near campus.

The student was walking near Strathmore Drive and Levering Avenue about 7 p.m. Saturday when a man began following her, UCLA police said.

The man grabbed the woman by the waist, threw her into a nearby car and sexually assaulted her. The victim was able break free and flee, police said.
The assailant drove off in an unknown direction. He was described by police as a white male, 30 to 35 years old, with a heavy build and short, straight brown hair. He is about 6 feet tall and was wearing a black Nike cotton shirt, beige synthetic athletic shorts and white shoes. He had sunburned skin in his neck area, police said.

The man was driving a four-door Honda Civic, possible 10 to 15 years old.

So while Boss and Orlando were working on giving the brand a distinct identity, associating it with a cause made it stand out.

Unlike the movie model, these Mags don’t self-lace -- maybe by 2015, as the film predicted -- but otherwise they’re perfect replicas of shoes fans have been petitioning for since the early 2000s. Whether or not they’ll ever be mass-produced is anyone’s guess. Anyone who doesn’t have a time-traveling DeLorean, anyway.
The real-world debut of the Nike Mags got us thinking about what other sci-fi futuristic products we’d like to see in the present, which ones we hope never become a reality and the ones that are already here.

It can control other devices remotely, do medical scans, operate computers and pick locks (though not wooden ones). Plus, it just looks cool and intimidating. First introduced in 1968, the Sonic Screwdriver is unlikely ever to become a reality. If someone does get around to making one, that someone probably will be Apple.
The Knife that Toasts from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”
We probably never will see a workable Lightsaber, but maybe we’ll see this someday, a heated laser knife that toasts bread as you slice it. Douglas Adams’ book and the movie are, of course, filled with inventions, some of which already are kind of a reality -- the Hitchhiker's Guide itself, a crowd-sourced, ever-changing, often inaccurate font of knowledge, yeah, that’s Wikipedia. But there’s nothing quite so simple, practical (and possible?) as a knife that lets you get rid of your toaster.

Sure, if there were ever the possibility of affordable commercial travel to Mars, yeah, people would be all for it. But not for long. Once the newness had worn off, the fourth rock from the sun would just seem monotonous and cold, like vacationing in the Midwest. Five years after the first commercial flight to Mars, the planet would be predominately a destination for hedonistic spring-breakers, who want what happens on Mars to stay on Mars. Another downside to going to Mars is you’d never really know if you were really there or just the victim of a botched memory implant procedure. Which, you know, is no way to feel while on vacation.
Artificial Intelligence
If there’s anything the books and films of sci-fi have taught us, it’s that you shouldn’t make a robot or android that’s smarter than you. Sure, in a few cases, robots are great to have around (uh, Spielberg’s “A.I.”?). But in every other situation, they rise against you (“The Terminator,” “I, Robot”) or enslave you for battery power (“The Matrix”). At best, they’ll just disagree with you and try to kill you (“2001,” “Alien”). And if you make them too well, they’re hard to spot (the biological androids of “Blade Runner”). Right now, everyone thinks that "Jeopardy" robot Watson is so great. When he and his brethren convert three-quarters of humanity into machine grease, you might think differently.

Pierce Brosnan’s last Bond film was undoubtedly his worst, taking the sometimes goofy series to the far reaches of science fiction. The biggest offender of the film had to be the invisible car, which, if you’re a secret agent, has its uses. But it would serve no purpose for the rich jerk who actually could afford it and certainly would pose some kind of traffic problem.

But they did get as exploitative and comprehensive as “Truman Show” predicted. Granted, the film, which starred Jim Carrey as an average guy who didn’t know he was the star of a 24-hour reality TV show, came out several years after MTV’s “The Real World” made its debut, but it’s still quite prescient of what was to come.

As dated as many aspects of the show now seem, it was probably one of the most influential pop culture institutions ever in the design of future technologies. As a Cracked.com article called “Six Eerily Specific Inventions Predicted in Science Fiction” noted, the communicators used by the Enterprise crew not only look a lot like the flip-design phones used today, but also foretold things like spotty cellphone reception. The crew also used something like a Bluetooth and eventually an iPad. And the universal translator of foreign languages is now a feature of smartphones.

TSA Changes Give Local Travelers Mixed Feelings

The Travel Security Administration met with Congress this week to start a series of changes to make getting through airport security easier.In coming weeks, children 12-years-old and younger will not have to remove their shoes to pass through security and child pat downs will be reduced, but not eliminated. Instead of a pat down, TSA agents will swab a child's hand and arm for any sign of explosive residue."We have been piloting also programs to deal with children under the age of 12 with respect to not only taking off their shoes but also pat down procedures," said Janet Napolitano, Homeland Security Secretary. "And we hope, over the coming weeks and months, to be able to begin rolling that out. It does require additional training of all of the thousands of TSA officers, but that is currently underway."Although there's a viral string of TSA child pat downs online with hundreds of negative comments about the procedure, local travelers still have mixed feelings about the changes."You just have to be very careful," said Leland Smith, a retired marine and father of younger children. THOUSANDS of counterfeit goods worth at least a hundred million pesos were destroyed yesterday by the Bureau of Customs led by Commissioner Angelito Alvarez.

Alvarez said the fake items included imitation of well-known brands like Louis Vuitton bags, Lacoste, Nike, Adidas shoes and watches.

“The China-made knock-offs were seized from warehouses being used by smugglers as storage areas for the counterfeit goods they supply to retail outlets in 168 Mall in Divisoria and other bargain centers in Metro Manila and nearby provinces,” he said.

It was the second biggest volume of illegal goods seized by the BoC. In April, the agency shredded at least P300 million worth of fake energizer batteries, clothing apparels and fashion accessories.

Alvarez said the goods destroyed yesterday and in April were part of a huge volume of counterfeit products seized last year.

BoC-Intellectual Property Rights Division head Zsae Carrie de Guzman said the wide gap between the seizure and the destruction of the products was due to the tedious process of securing legal papers and issuing subpoenas to consignees and brokers.

Records from the Intellectual Property Rights Office of the Philippines showed the BoC confiscated P1.3 billion worth of fake products from January to August this year.

Last month, the IPRD raided two warehouses in Binondo and hauled P1 billion worth of fake clothing apparel and accessories.

Another P300 million worth of goods were seized within customs zones, particularly at the Port of Manila and the Manila International Container Port.

“The creation of IPRD tasked to run after intellectual property rights violators will be one of the lasting legacies of Commissioner Alvarez,” De Guzman said.

Officials of the IPOPHL and representatives of US Department of Homeland Security and legitimate manufacturers of branded products witnessed yesterday’s destruction of fake goods.

Alvarez said another P1.3 billion worth of confiscated products now in customs warehouses is also set for destruction.’
